LAS AMERICAS PRO BONO PROGRAM

Las Americas is actively seeking pro bono attorneys to assist with key legal initiatives supporting immigrant minors, asylum seekers, crime survivors, and individuals in immigration custody. 

Below are our current pro bono opportunities and requirements for each work stream. Please note Las Americas provides robust training and mentoring for all pro bono cases.

Below are our current Pro Bono opportunities and requirements for each work stream.

  • Las Americas is looking for attorneys licensed to practice in Texas to partner with us in seeking protections for immigrant youth in Texas family courts. The pro bono attorney’s role will be to work with our under-18 clients to file for protective orders in Texas family court, with the ultimate goal of pursuing Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) status.

    Requirements:

    • Licensed to practice law in Texas.

    • No prior experience in immigration or family law required.

    Actively Recruiting:

    • We currently have one client that we are prepared to represent and just need a pro bono attorney to appear in family court in March to obtain a predicate order. We will prepare the documentation and manage communication with the client.

  • Las Americas assists asylum seekers who have been in prolonged ICE detention and are seeking release through habeas petitions in federal court. These cases are filed in the Western District of Texas – El Paso Division. While prior habeas experience is helpful, it is not required.

    Actively Recruiting

  • Las Americas is seeking pro bono attorneys to assist with mandamus delay litigation in federal court for long-delayed cases, including:

    • U visa certifications

    • I-130 petitions (family-based immigrant petitions)

    • I-730 petitions (follow-to-join refugee/asylee petitions)

  • We are seeking pro bono attorneys to provide 1:1 support to asylum seekers in need of assistance with:

    • Completing Form I-589 (Application for Asylum and Withholding of Removal).

    • Drafting declarations to support asylum claims.

    • Preparing country conditions packets.

    • Filing motions to change venue.

  • Las Americas provides training and support for pro bono attorneys interested in representing detained immigrants at bond hearings. We also offer assistance with client communication to facilitate representation.
