PRO BONO PROGRAM

ATTORNEYS & ACCREDITED REPRESENTATIVES

the las americas pro-bono program provides free legal services to immigrants and refugees detained in the el paso processing center, torrance county detention facility, and otero county processing center to prepare them for or represent them in seeking asylum in the united states.

we rely on the participation and involvement of both local and non-local attorneys, accredited representatives, law students, and social workers to better expand our reach and serve immigrants and refugees coming through the second-largest port of entry in the united states.

  • las americas greatly encourages the participation and involvement of attorneys in the el paso area. if you are a local attorney interested in volunteering, las americas hosts a monthly training on our detained intake procedures.

for more information, please fill out the local attorney interest form.

  • since the pro-bono program’s inception, las americas has worked with both groups of and individual legal representatives from across the country, all of whom are passionate about immigrant and human rights.

all non-local group and individual pro-bono volunteers are asked to commit to the organization for at least a full week, monday through friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and to pay their own expenses.

    tasks for the week include:

cfi prep: prepare people to articulate their case during their credible fear interview. note: preference for cfi prep will be given to attorneys who are fluent in spanish.

legal research: country conditions and court rulings in the 5th circuit to support positive findings in immigration court.

remote work: assist with trial briefs, appellate briefs, requests for evidence, and legal research.

las americas provides a comprehensive training on the first day, covering our detained intake procedures, immigration 101, credible fear interview (cfi) prep, asylum issue-spotting, and declaration drafting.

though spanish is not required, it is helpful to have at least one person in your group who speaks spanish.
