Las Americas Statement on Executive Orders Regarding Immigration

EL PASO, TEXAS – In response to Trump’s series of executive orders and actions on immigration, Jennifer Babaie, Director of Advocacy and Legal Services at Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center in El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and New Mexico, released the following statement:

“With this series of executive orders, the Trump administration has again solidified its standing as a government of cruelty, chaos, and violence. Many of these orders, such as attempting to reinterpret the 14th Amendment, go beyond the bounds of the law and our Constitution, but of course, that was the point—to instill fear and confusion among our communities; to further weaponize systems with the goal of abusing Black, brown, and immigrant families.

“Make no mistake, we won't be fooled, we won't be distracted, and we refuse to accept the punishment of immigrant communities as an alternative to actual solutions. Reviving the Remain in Mexico policy and ending all access to asylum at the border only serves to endanger families and undermine due process. At Las Americas, we remain committed to our mission of advocating for the most vulnerable and providing access to high-quality legal services and education to immigrant communities and people on the move, regardless of status. Neither Trump nor his shiny press releases or irrational policies will end that.”
